The Layered Approach to Security: Why Effective Protection Works Like an Onion

spectrum48k@blueyonder.co.uk2026-10-05T11:06:00+00:00

Effective physical security rarely relies on a single measure.

The strongest strategies use multiple layers of protection, so that anyone attempting to reach a critical asset must overcome a series of barriers. This is often described as a layered security approach. The simplest way to visualise it is as an onion.

Each layer adds another level of deterrence, detection or delay, increasing the time and effort required to reach the asset at the centre.

The Security Onion

A typical layered strategy may include:

  • Site perimeter – fencing, gates, barriers and lighting
  • Detection and surveillance – CCTV, alarms and monitoring
  • Building envelope – walls, roofs, doors, glazing and protected openings
  • Internal security zones – controlled access and restricted areas
  • Secure enclosure – a dedicated hardened room or protected space
  • Core asset – the people, equipment, data or materials being protected

As you move towards the centre, security measures typically become more focused and more resistant.

Where Our Security Composite Panels Fit

Security composite panel systems can form an important part of several layers within this strategy.

They can be used to create:

  • hardened external walls;
  • secure internal partitions;
  • protected corridors and zones;
  • secure rooms;
  • security ceilings; and
  • complete modular enclosures.

This makes it possible to create a secure building within a building, concentrating higher levels of protection around the areas where they are genuinely required.

Deter. Detect. Delay. Respond.

Physical security is fundamentally about creating time.

A successful layered strategy should:

Deter an attack where possible.
Detect it as early as possible.
Delay progress towards the protected asset.
Respond before the security layers are defeated.

No individual wall, door, alarm or CCTV system achieves this alone.

The strength comes from how the different measures work together.

Protecting the Complete Line

A secure wall is only as effective as the interfaces around it.

Doors, glazing, ventilation, ducts, cable routes and other service penetrations can all introduce potential weaknesses.

For this reason, security should be considered as a complete protected line, rather than a collection of individual products.

Certified products tested to standards such as LPS 1175, EN 1627 and EN 1522/23 can provide evidence of resistance to defined threats, but they should always sit within a wider security strategy informed by the identified risk.

At Modular Security Solutions, our composite security walling, ceilings and enclosure systems can form part of these inner physical security layers, helping create secure rooms, protected zones and modular high-security environments.

The objective is not simply to specify a secure wall.

It is to understand where that wall sits within the wider security onion and how it helps protect the asset at its centre.
